Nolen Racing Finishes
Fifth and Sixth in Wisconsin
OREGON, Wis., July 1 — The Nolen Racing USAC Silver Crown cars finished fifth and sixth in Friday night’s Bytec Dairyland 100 at Madison International Speedway.
Chris Windom of St. Louis, Mo. finished fifth in the Whiteland, Ind.-based team’s No. 17, while Jerry Coons Jr. of Greencastle, Ind. was right behind him in sixth place in the Nolen Racing No. 20. Both cars sport decals for KECO Coatings and Indy Race Parts.
Windom qualified fifth, just 0.311 off the pole, and he was never out of the top five in the 100-lap race on the half-mile paved track.
He passed Kyle Hamilton at the start to rise to fourth. He and Eric Gordon ran side by side for a while until Windom passed him for third on lap seven. He held third until lap 67, when Bobby Santos pushed him back to fourth, but he regained third on lap 85 by passing Justin Grant. Grant got him back on a restart and he ran in fourth place from laps 93 through 98, but Jim Anderson wiggled by him at the end and Windom finished fifth.
Coons qualified seventh in the 20-car field in the Nolen Racing No. 20. He remained in seventh or eighth place for the first 20 laps, but moved into sixth on lap 21. He was fifth from laps 30 through 47 until Aaron Pierce passed him. Coons ran in sixth for the entire second half of the contest, and finished in that position.
Both Windom and Coons had their hands full in their respective cockpits.
“We had another fast car, but we lost the rear brakes 20 laps into the race,” Windom said. “It felt as if we had a top-two car if we hadn’t had that problem.”
“I had a good car, but we broke a water line and the engine was overheating and losing power at the end of the race,” Coons said. “We were fortunate to even finish.”
Kody Swanson, who won this year’s Pay Less Little 500 at Anderson (Ind.) Speedway in a Nolen Racing car, won the race and tied Jack Hewitt on the series’ all-time victory list with 23.
Windom is now third in the series’ point standings while Coons is ninth.
The series’ next race is another pavement race at Salem Speedway in Salem, Ind. on Aug. 11. It is billed as the Discover Scott County "Joe James/Pat O'Connor Memorial" Presented by Kentuckiana Ford Dealers.
Seven days later the series has a daytime race on the dirt track at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield, Ill.
